there has been so much useless unneeded dArama about DDs and what's good, what's not..i can't tell you how much of a migraine i get from looking at some of the comments circulating around from this week alone. :( but ultimately what's the point of being destructive?! be contructive, not destructive! Saying "This sucks" "I hate this" "You suck" "This doesn't deserve a DD" "Why did the GM pick this" are all DESTRUCTIVE comments. this is a community for improving and sharing. i'm not saying go all LOVEFEST but what's the point of being rude just because we can't see your face? Would you honestly say any of the the things said if we were face to face? Honestly...any one who's going to type in two to three words of destructive criticing is just lazy....or bored...or lonely... maybe you just need someone to talk to...might i suggest a friend who can handle your personality? :evileye: why should the artist that you're looking to belittle have to ask you "why?" if you've got a problem with the piece, give them a real reason...give them a constructive critique that they can honestly use to improve the piece with. what's wrong with saying: "i don't like the piece, i have issues with........" no one's feelings are hurt...no one's brain is twitching because they can't get a fast response from you on why, or where they went wrong with the comp....we can move on calmly from that point on

If you have a problem with a GM's decision...someone's artwork message box is NOT the place to gripe. Go ask the GM, because you know they're not looking for your comment in a previous DD that they just gave.:evileye: Your victim can't tell you why it was chosen as a DD, and if something just boils your blood to the point of lashing out at someone, that DD badge is going to tell you where to go! But before you start trolling for blood, remember there's no monitary award that any DD is given, no added subscription, no points, no dA dollars, no jewels, no diamonds, no llamas, no interview,...they're on the front page for 24hrs and it's not going to kill you to check your messages the next day if you feel so offended and wronged by that single solitary little featured piece.

It doesn't matter if this is the internet. Thick skin or no...there's still a need to act civil. You're not messaging your boss, your teacher, professor, client, lawyer, whatever in that manner are you? When you step out of your house, whether it's through the internet, or front door you're surrounded by other people you have to deal with on a day to day basis. I don't see what the big deal is about etiquette, it's not that hard to implicate.

Etiquette: (pronounced [,eti'ket]) is a code of behavior that delineates expectations for social behavior according to contemporary conventional norms within a society, social class, or group.

if you're not going to help them to better themselves or their art, just move on the next piece. so simple...trash talk doesn't help. and with all the countries inter-mingling...why try and rile up a misunderstanding? i thought this was suppose to be fun, an escape for all of our weird quirks and ideals, or better yet a place that can also be used for business. not everything is my cup of tea and there's always going to be something i'll feel that way about. I'm not going to say something's bad if i don't have a definite reason to give the person, i don't believe in messing with people's heads that way. If you want to help someone, give them a critic or a comment, if you're just bored...go learn a new language or wash your hair. :giggle:

and for those who say well saying "It Sucks" is the same as any other person saying "OMG Awesome" is NOT the same.
OMG Awesome: says oh okay, I guess i'm going in the right direction with my work...I'll try and improve but go along similar lines of creating.(even though it's not completely contructive, a compliment is just a compliment, they're more neutral than anything as far as bettering the artist)
IT SUCKS: says......O_O what the fudge!? what did I do wrong?!.....I don't know what's bad...I don't know what to keep...do I scrap my next project, what should I do?

BE CONSTRUCTIVE, NOT DESTRUCTIVE....

^^ now does that make any sense? I can tell you didn't really read the article. I never said in this entire piece that you had to love or like anything. I'm saying if you have a problem with it, give them a suggestion as how to improve. If you feel so strongly about a piece that you can't simply move on and look at something else, then instead of being destructive, telling them how much you hate their form of art or them, give them constructive criticism. No one needs to put down another person because of their preference. We're here to improve ourselves, so lets help each other out. That's all I said. Please read the whole thing. When you take it out of context, it makes me sound like some happy go lucky freak who believes that every piece of artwork here is perfect. I'm a realist, but i'm not going to go around bashing people to make myself feel better about my day. ^^ Basically, all I'm saying is let people know what can make their artwork better. I've seen my share of pretty bad artwork, but I know that that person probably is trying their best, and they're still learning. I'm not going around hunting for bad artwork, which I've seen some people do, just so they can make fun of other people. If I feel I can be helpful, then I'll chime in and suggest. If someone comes into your art gallery and says "You can't draw, all of your artwork is bad" isn't that a terrible feeling? :sniff: Don't you want to know why?

Every art community face this problem. Itīs even worse in other websites where they have the option to post comments as anonymous or use fake nicknames, without giving their emails or websites. Then these rude people just "hit and run". Theyīre comfortable to say "it sucks" because they know that youīll never find them again to reply. I have drawings in other websites, and when people make rude comments there I just delete them. This simple. =]
I donīt know if itīs possible to delete comments on DA... is it?

Awesome article^^

Ever notice that generally the people who straight-out bitch at you either have no deviations in their gallery, and when they do the deviations are kind of...terrible?
Not saying that this is always the case. Some people are good at art and just have plain nasty hateful personalities. But it seems like the majority is flipping out 'cause they are jealous that they were not featured...or their art just isn't very good and they are lashing out at the people who are better than them at art.
But that happens to everyone, you know? I'm jealous of a lot of peoples' artwork, but I am not nasty about it...how about thinking of it as motivation to improve so you can catch up to or even surpass the person? I t would be great if more people tried to be a bit more good-natured on this site and many others. Bashing helps no one^^

...wow, sorry for the long-windedness... 0_0

I totally agree with you, but I feel the need to play devil's advocate a bit here.

DD means a MASSIVE jump in pageviews. We're talking insane numbers. You've gotten one, you know. Some people on dA aren't here for the art, they're here for the attention and the pageviews. Its why the "its not MySpace/Facebook" rants get started, which I think are stupid to begin with but that's not the point. They think "How dare they get extra attention my art is sooooo much better" (it generally isn't) and will often rationalize with "They only got a DD cause its Naruto/Twilight/insert fandom here" or "They only got a DD cause its POOORN (some people don't get artistic nudes)" and other such stuff. Its wrong, but it is where they're coming from.

You're right, of course. Totally right. But there is a level of safety granted by internet autonomy. Its the same thing that convinces people stalking is okay on the internet because they can't be caught. I dunno, I've always tried to be myself online. When I get into a rude mode, its the kind of rude mode I'd get into in real life. But not everyone acts the same way.

There have been DDs that have bothered me for multiple reasons. But as you said. Don't like it, move on. If you simply MUST complain, do it to the GM not the artist who is probably still in shock over actually getting a DD! XD

Awesome news article Pixel :D I think most of the people who tear down the people who get DDs are super jealous. Ever look in their galleries? Hideous.

Sometimes I think they say stuff to get attention to get people to click on their page. Really, the need for clicks is a like crack to some of these people.

And really, there is a reason they got a DD, because the person who awarded it, liked it. Its their opinion. And honestly everyone deserves a chance to shine. I honestly don't like every DD I see, but I don't rip it to shreds. Let them have their 15 minutes. I had mine :D

ha ha, my page views are minuscule compared to some of these real artists out here (including you and your awesome gallery, lol)but I gave up on that too. I'd rather have 2 real watchers than 4,000,000,000 clicks, with no real commentary. I don't think those mud slingers realize that. People are clicking, but no one likes their art. Such a waste. :bored: But thank you, you did make me feel special :D :glomp:

I couldn't agree more! It's like we need to sit them down in front of a kid's movie like "Bambi" and make them listen to Thumper over and over "If you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all."

Giving constructive comments or critiques are part of the art world, but blatantly bashing someone's artwork just because they received a DD is outrageous.

Think before you speak, or in this case- comment. Put yourself in their shoes, how you would like it if a bunch of people spammed your work with hurtful remarks? Nobody likes receiving that kind of comment. Nobody. And if you do, well, there's something wrong. We can all learn from constructive criticism, but to simply say you hate something, of that it sucks... what is achieved, other than to show yourself as a petty, jealous person whom has no respect for the individual artist. Honestly, people. The golden rule really does apply here.

And if you're going to complain to the GM- have a good reason to do so. Telling them you just don't like it, or that you think it sucks is pointless. Give a reason for why you feel it wasn't deserving. And as I keep saying (I have read and commented on several articles like this lately) If you don't like a DD, suggestion on yourself, even your own work. Pointless bitching is just that-pointless. And annoying, frankly.

Good article with excellent points.

One is free to say whatever the hell they want, but that exact same freedom allows me to run around one's profile, screaming "you're an ill-mannered a-hole!" and/or forget to give a shit about one's comment.

In other words, proper comments aren't mandatory but the lack thereof is a certain ticket to bad reputation. And you know what they say about bad reputation...

Ban hammered due to expressing one's opinion? Now, that, I have to admit, is just too much power, too easily abused, even though I hate stupid comments. Unless you are referring to some extreme forms of personal insult (emphasis on extreme) and spamming/stalking, in which case I suppose it could be justified. But let's not get carried away and start banning whoever we dislike, shall we?

:) Not straight to ban hammer. There are other ways to resolve this issue, but in extreme case yes. If it's to comment as such as "you're an ill-mannered a-hole!", "this deviation sucks" etc, by using freedom of speech as you said, if the deviant receiving this (who was in no way to get them in the first place) reports them, anything can happen. Freedom of opinion doesn't mean firing whatever we want in someone's front door. If someone doesn't get it, or have a problem with a deviant or a DD, note politely to the GM or $Moonbeam13 regarding it, or report or ask for help in helpdesk which is also in the deviant's league of having freedom of speech. Use that if someone really want to have some light shed on the piece or someone using freedom of speech!
And if the person who for some reason, was also in need of being insulted as such was there, they should still be reported to helpdesk to be resolved in a proper manner. It would look poorly on those who fought for freedom of rights, speech, opinions to see what has been being done in the names of what they did. As you said, it's unwise to have a bad reputation. :)
