:Sailor Haumea: by Asher-Bee :Sailor Haumea: by Asher-Bee
:trophy:3rd Place:trophy:
My entry to !DracheaRannak's latest contest. She's Sailor Haumea.
Haumea: "Named after the Hawaiian Goddess of fertility and childbirth. She was a powerful sorceress, and gave birth to many creatures....."
Her most memorable asset are her eyes. :flirty: You'll find yourself lost in either her eyes or at sea but either will sweep off your feet. She's a powerful deity, with a gentle nature. She loves the laughter that spills from a new life born, but lovingly leads the passing to their final haven with noble grace. Her favorite pair of pumps remind her of her favorite movie, The Wizard of Oz. She thoroughly believes in the term, "There's No Place Like Home," and adds cheerfully, "But If You Have to Walk There, Do It With A Little Glitz!"

I love this rendition of Sailor Haumea! You have my vote and I do hope you win. It's not just the picture that catches me, but the story behind her as well. It looks like you really thought of the name and put meaning behind making the character where as some of the others I've seen just draw up something cute and post, "Here is my Haumea".
Good Luck!

thank you thank you thank you  you have no idea how much i've nit-picked this piece apart. i always want to improve on it, but i can never tell if i'm going over board with what i might change, or if the piece is too simple for Malcolm's taste. ^^; the last time i tried one of his contests I think I was too "out of the box" and they didn't look like real sailor scouts, so i'm realllllly trying to keep my fingers out of adobe before i overdo the picture :giggle: having you say that kind of comment pushes my mouse away from the picture so to speak :giggle: so thank you, truly.

thank you. the rules stated simplistic backgrounds are accepted as well. if this isn't simplistic, i'll need a few examples of what that might be then.^^;

Well, simplistic is usually some grass plus clouds, or a background like this one [link] ;)

This here is a legitimate full background to my taste. And I have to say it's beautiful *___*

well if they choose to take it out, they'll take it out. ^^ if it bothers you, i don't mind you noting the founders to take the piece out of the club. i don't make waves. ^^

This is absolutely beautiful. I love how well the colors blend but the lines are defined. The little spots of sparkles really accept the piece very well. My only suggestion, perhaps if you brought a little more of the purple down into the sky, it'd even up the blue & purple vs. the orange & reds balance. Excellent work though either way :)

thank you very much. i did try a few options with the layout of the sky. i tried adding a little more purple, but it really darkened the piece and didn't convey the sunset i wanted to convey. :( i tried adding a touch of blue too, but then it started to look like a reflection of the sea and it wasn't where i wanted the piece to go. :giggle:

Wow, she's very colorful, and so very shiny! I'm kinda wondering how she's able to stand on the sand in those stilletos though. I get the obvious Wizard of Oz reference, but was that a further reference to anything Hawaii specific?

Just wondering, are you sure you have the Hawaiian in her name right? I know aka is Japanese for red, but I always thought "mea" (as in Waimea meaning red water) was Hawaiian for red. I know very little of the language myself, but that struck me as a little odd.

wow..i have a feeling you're a sailor moon fan. ^^; um lemme see if i can answer your questions. firstly, she's not on top of the sand completely. the sand is slightly starting to give underneath her shoes....think of it as a glamour shot before she sinks to the point where you can't see her shoes, or that she's on a stone slab, covered with beach sand. ^^; If that doesn't work, think of it as fantasy. :giggle: i just didn't want her on a spaceless background.
secondly, the wizard of oz reference was suppose to just be for fun. as a character that i gave a personality to, i decided to make her favorite movie the wizard of oz. ^^ in her made up personality, i made her like colorful things, and shoes are a favorite of hers...or at least that's the way i designed her fictional personality.
also, the name is not something i made up. i actually went to an online baby website that produces names for me to see from various origins. The pronunciation was shown as you see, and I recorded it exactly as it showed me. If you'd like, I can give you the website for you to check the name. ^^ I can also show you the poll that I placed in order to get opinions from my watchers on the name which includes the origins and meanings of each: [link] Most wanted Akemi as you can see, but seeing as it's a Japanese name, and that's been done alot, i went with a Hawaiian name. ^^

Oooh, sorry if I came off too critical, it wasn't my intention. Mostly just curiosity.

I am a Sailor Moon fan for certain, but I think I'm more WAY more nitpicky about Hawaii stuff. ^^; The heels comment was me being silly. Probably should have used an emoticon to denote that. You could say they're held up with shoujo sparkles and I'd be cool. :-P

I think the heels are awesome though, and I was wondering if there was anything more to them. I tend to associate part of Wizard of Oz with Hawaii due to Israel Kamakawiwo'ole's cover of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" and Elton John's "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road." Just curious if you'd made the same connections.

*shrugs* I could be wrong on the name, the meaning just struck me as odd since I always knew "mea" as red. There are a few words that are actually the same in Japanese and Hawaiian (Kai = ocean the one on the top of my head), so maybe aka's another one.

oh it's okay. ^^well i stuck more so to the basics when considering the Wizard of Oz. I like classical pieces like that, and I've personally never heard either of the two versions you mentions. ^^; i've always thought of hawaii as a very close area...they're very family oriented there, and the home as a whole is something very precious...so the term "there's no place like home" stuck with me.
there are plenty of languages with similar pronunciations so i'm not surprised. i pretty much take it at face value since i'm not famliar with either culture's language. ^^

I know just enough of both to be dangerous; sound like I know what I'm talking about but not really have a clue. As far as Hawaiian's concerned, I know the words that are actually used day-to-day: directions, meanings behind place names, and some other words and phrases (ones the tourists hear and ones they don't). And fish.

Of course as far as modern Hawaiian culture is concerned, the "language" would more or less be pidgin. Hawaii's a melting pot, so it's actually really refreshing to see a Haumea that doesn't have a Hawaiian first name.

I like the home explanation. That really does work. It took me quite a while upon coming to California to break the habit of calling everybody at church uncle and auntie.
